Record Elgon Cup win for Kenya

Kenya’s participation in WXV reduced the first Elgon Cup for four years to a single game, and their experience in Dubai helped them to a record win against Uganda.

The Elgon Cup between Kenya and Uganda is one of women’s rugby’s oldest competitions, dating back to 2006. Prior to COVID in 2019 Kenya retained the Cup with two record 30-point wins. This weekend they more than doubled that with a massive 87-3 win.

Sharon Auma gave Kenya a dream start after scoring with her first touch of the ball in the fifth minute when Stella Wafula found her with a beautiful offload as Kenya led 5-0.

Wafula turned from provider to scorer after a quick tap and restart found the Ugandans asleep, pacing her way to touch down Kenya’s second try for a 10-0 lead after another missed conversion.

Diana Omosso then followed immediately after Auma and Wafula to become the third straight back to touch down a try to stretch Kenya’s lead to 17-0.

Wafula then broke from the midfield with quick feet and dummies that despite being stopped by the Ugandan backline, Kenya were awarded a penalty try to lead 24-0.

Phoebe Akinyi then showed she is too quick for the Ugandans after receiving the ball straight from kick off and pacing her way to the try line to stretch Kenya’s lead to 31-0.

Already 45-0 up at halftime, there was no let up in the second half. Stella Wafula, Christabel Lindo eventually scored hattricks as nine players scored tries.
