Tunisia win first test against Uganda

Tunisia have won the first game in a two-test series against Uganda.

Following the signing of a joint development agreement between Tunisia and Uganda, announced last month, the first in what is set to be a regular series of tests took place today in Tunis.

The game was the first meeting between the teams at test level, and only Tunisia’s fifth game after their debut in 2021 – although they won their first three, their only test defeat so far coming at the hands of Madagascar.

Uganda, on the other hand, were well beaten by Kenya last week. It was therefore no surprise that Tunisia quickly took control of the game, scoring twice in the opening 14 minutes to lead 12-0.

However poor defence by the Tunisians, totally filing to defend a ruck on their own line, allowed Uganda back into the game. At the midpoint of the first half they led 14-7.

Despite this a great steal by Tunisia’s No 8 set up a third try and as the game approached halftime Tunisia led 21-7.

But Uganda fought back immediately with a break down the far touchline from Emilly Lekuru pulling Uganda back into the game. At halftime Tunisia led 21-12.

A static Tunisian defence – turning their backs after Uganda gained a penalty shortly after the restart – then allow the visitors to pull within four points, but after being held up for one potential score, Tunisia scored their fourth try with a sweeping backline move midway through the half. 26-17

Despite further pressure there were no more scores in the game, Tunisia winning by 26-17  (although the scoreboard confusingly gave the result as 27-17).
